The Asclepius Pain Management Functional Restoration Program fulfills the ODG criteria of 20 full day session equivalents, frequent evaluations and periodic reports. It is based on behavior modification principles that emphasize a slow, steady approach reinforced by positive peer group dynamics. Daily sessions are limited 2 hours. The program has three phases and includes scheduled support for one year.
Patients participate in 30 Functional Conditioning sessions (3 sessions weekly for 10 weeks), 10 Cognitive Behavioral sessions (1 session weekly for 10 weeks) and 10 Nutrition & Lifestyle sessions (1 session weekly for 10 weeks). During this phase the patients develop pain management skills and begin to reduce their dependence on medications. They become physically fit and adopt routine daily stretching and exercise to stay fit. They learn how to eat a healthy diet and experience changes in body composition and weight loss.
Patients participate in 3 sessions of Functional Conditioning, 12 Cognitive Behavioral sessions, and 3 Nutrition& Lifestyle sessions over 10 weeks. They continue their programs of stretching and exercise at home and at local fitness centers. They continue to work on pain management skills and on reducing medication. They continue to work on healthy diets and lifestyles. 2 sessions are provided for family members/support people.
Patients participate in 3 follow up sessions for Functional Conditioning, 6 sessions of Cognitive Behavioral group therapy and 3 follow up sessions for Nutrition & Lifestyle. They focus on continuing to use their new skills to decrease dependence on the health care system and to resume their roles in family, community and, whenever possible, the work force.
